Triumph Over Darkness: Lessons from Jesus’ Victory on the Cross

May is an interestingly busy month. It is full of memories that feel like victories in a sense, as we celebrate graduations from kindergarten through college. Some of these victories are greater than others, in my opinion. Kindergarten is mostly a fun one. Elementary school is a bit more challenging, but even those struggles are often pushed along. Middle school is challenging, more so due to personality and puberty changes. High school is a level up, as you must meet specific requirements, including testing. Trade school or college is likely the most challenging in terms of education as one prepares for their career. While graduation is a victory, it is also the beginning of the next season of life.

Jesus’ victory on the cross is the most important and life-altering event of all time. Often, Christians simply celebrate the fact that Jesus died for the sins of man alone. However, what Jesus did was WAY bigger than saving humanity from their sin. Jesus ALSO defeated ALL of the enemies of God and humanity! He defeated Satan/death by rising again. He defeated the powers of darkness by shedding his blood for us and the remission of our sins. He defeated principalities of evil by providing a way for all nations (Jews and Gentiles) to be in the family of God. We simply must believe and have loyalty to the Most High God alone, following Jesus daily.

The enemies of God wanted to destroy humanity through death (Genesis 3), defilement of bloodlines (Genesis 6), and separation of the nations (Genesis 11). Isn’t it amazing what all Jesus did? The Bible even mentions the idea that the forces of darkness had no idea what would happen when they killed Jesus, and if they did, they would never have done it! Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 2:8 (NLT), “But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord.”

This is GOOD NEWS! Yet, like the victories of graduation, our belief in Jesus is simply the beginning of our journey of living a loyal life to the Most High God. Our victory over our enemies doesn’t mean life will be easy or battle-free, but it does mean it will be meaningful and, most importantly, hopeful that our future is bright!
